Designed in a fusion of styles — from Spanish Revival to Moderne — this stoic cathedral to learning, conceived to educate LA’s growing population, completed in stone and finished with a world class sculpture and mural program in 1926, befitted a city rising in national and global stature. There were calls to tear it down in the '70s, and thoughtful citizens organized to save the landmark, spurring the creation of the Los Angeles Conservancy, a champion of LA preservation causes ever since.
