Originally conceived to be neoclassical in design – imagine Doric columns like the Parthenon in Athens – construction on the library began and then abruptly stopped in 1912, and when it was resumed with more funding in place in the late ‘30s, tastes and budgets had changed. The final design — sometimes described as an open book — would become one of New York City’s finest examples of Streamline Moderne, and today, this enduring monument to the most democratic principle of learning for all is also one of the finest public buildings in the entire city.
